Education
Attala County and Kosciusko Public School Districts rank among the state's best, with Kosciusko's SAT scores in the upper 5 percent of Mississippi scores and ACT scores exceeding the national average. Each district offers state-of-the-art Tech Prep labs containing workstations with Internet access. Recent improvements and new construction have added $13.5 million in new educational facilities including one of the most advanced tecnology programs in the USA.
Community volunteers with a spirit of innovation have added great value to the educational forefront. The LEAP (Learning Enhancement and Achievement Program) Center is staffed by volunteers and certified teachers who provide free tutoring and support for K-12 students. The Sumners Foundation, which has been privately funded for over two decades, provides scholarship opportunities to area residents. KFEE (Kosciusko Foundation for Excellence in Education) has supported the efforts of teachers and students by awarding over $50,000 in grants during its eight-year existence.
Other childhood educational choices include a wide variety of childcare options from privately owned to church-affiliated centers and the Attala Corporate Child Development Center. Private schools for children K - 12 are also an important educational resource in Attala County.
Continuing education is a serious pursuit as evidenced by the array of programs available in the area. Leadership Attala Program, sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, is designed to train young adults for tomorrow's community leadership roles. The Attala Education Center, a satellite of Homes Community College, offers day and night classes. Mississippi State University, Holmes Junior College and Wood Junior College offer night courses in Kosciusko. Magnolia Bible College, a fully accredited institution, provides liberal arts and language courses plus Bachelor of Arts degrees in Bible and Theology. And the Kosciusko-Attala Vocational-Technical Center is an outstanding resource for night courses in business, the trades and advanced technologies.
Residents of all ages benefit from the Attala County Library, which is headquarters for the five-county Mid-Mississippi Regional Library System. The 18,000-square-foot facility is a beehive of activity that serves thirteen separate public libraries. Among its many free services are story hours, continuing adult and children's programming, reference and research services, services for the handicapped, videos and audio books, typewriters, computers with interactive encyclopedia programs, copying and fax machines, as well as two public meeting rooms.
